Frequently asked Questions about Joining Grace
Q. Do I have to to talk to someone before joining?
A. Although we would like to get the chance to know you before you join, it is not a requirement.
Q. Do I have to take a class?
A. No, you do not have to take a class. We offer the New Beginnings class as a way of learning basic information about the Christian faith, the beliefs and history of the United Methodist Church and specifically about Grace Church. The class also contains a component to help define your Spiritual Gifts.
Q. Once I have decided to join, what do I do next?
A. Great! You made the decision; the hard part is over. Simply contact the church office at 717-249-1512 so we can obtain your information.
Q. Do I have to be re-baptized?
A. No. The United Methodist Church believes in one baptism. We recognize the baptism of any Christian denomination.
Q. Do I have to walk up front to join?
A. We prefer that you do. When someone joins the church, we want to give our members an opportunity to meet their new brother or sister in Christ. We celebrate new members and want the congregation to have a chance to welcome you personally.
Q. What about my children?
A. Children are an important part of our church family. When they join the church with you, they are considered preparatory members. They become full members when they go through confirmation in the sixth grade.
Q. My children need baptized. When can I do that?
A. If your child is an infant, we can arrange to baptize them at a Sunday service. At least one parent has to be a member of the church. If the child is not an infant, we suggest that they wait until confirmation and the sacrament of baptism will be administered then.
Q. What is expected of me?
A. When a person joins, they are asked if they will support the church by their prayers, presence, gifts and service. This membership vow is not only for the benefit of the church, but for you as well. Together we make up the Body of Christ, the church. Each one’s involvement in the life and work of the church strengthens the body.
Q. And if I have additional questions?
A. Contact the church office by calling 717-249-1512 or by e-mail: eocker@carlislegrace.org.
